Blencathra

Blencathra. A grand and romantic mountain that dominates the scene on the drive into the Lake District from Penrith to Keswick. A mountain that boasts two of the finest ridges in the distirct: Sharp Edge and Hall's Fell Ridge. Tucked below Sharp Edge, Scales Tarn is a majestic natural amphitheatre - totally at odds with the jagged ridge above. And at the summit is a view across the Vale of Keswick that takes the breath away - even when it is not made all the more dramatic by an impromptu fighter jet fly-by.  At times desolate, at times beautiful - Blencathra is possibly the finest mountain in England. On Thursday 2nd June 2016 I climbed it twice.
